Hotbed of creativity in Helsinki

Do you know that feeling when you’re bursting with new ideas and fresh inspiration after a museum visit or a walk through a creative neighbourhood? It’s what we experience at Amos Rex in central Helsinki. Amos Rex isn’t only a new art museum, it’s a true creative hub, with event spaces, a cinema, restaurants and shops. When we built a unique concept store for Iittala here, we were blown away. We think it’s a great example of the shopping experience of today and of the future: integrated in a space where all senses are stimulated.

Amos Rex
Amos Rex, a design of JKMM Architects, is built underground with only a few ‘tentacled domes’ popping out on the plaza above. The museum’s entrance is located in the 1936 functionalist building Lasipalatsi (“Glass Palace”), which had been in decay for decades. Its interior was stripped back to the bare structure and meticulously renovated renovated in the spirit of 30s modernism. The private art museum takes its name from the former Amos Andersen museum (Anderson was a famous local patron of the arts), merged with the famous ‘Bio Rex’ film theatre that was always located here.

Iittala’s concept store
Old-meets-new applies to Iittala’s concept store as well, for its design was inspired by functionalist aesthetics, translated to fit into a contemporary retail setting. The famous Finnish tableware brand has a history that goes back to 1881, during which Finland’s most famous artists have designed for them. Their most iconic pieces are on display in a mini-exhibit in the store. Do you want to read more, click here.

Must see
Through May 19th, Amos Rex presents the work of Amsterdam-based artist duo Studio Drift. Working across different media, they are known for their poetic large-scale installations such as Drifter, a large concrete block floating in the air.
